Disconnecting on Purpose

There are so many things I love about social media… the main one being that it allows me to stay in touch with friends and family that are scattered across the globe!  Not to mention that part of being a photographer these days is being in and involved in social media.  It’s a fantastic way to connect with other photographers and my past, present and future clients.  It really is amazing!

But at the same time, it’s nice to disconnect for a while.  To set aside all of our mobile devices, to turn off the computer, to leave the tv remote alone and just BE with those around us.  The people who are by our side on a daily basis need us to be more present than anyone online does (except for far away family and close friends, of course!).  So when Ben and I have left the country (first on our honeymoon and then this past week on a cruise), we purposefully haven’t looked for wi-fi or tried to get online (social media & email) while we’re gone.

And it’s SO nice.  It’s nice to sit with each other and talk, to watch the waves, to get knocked over by the waves, to go to shows, to have dinner, to watch a movie in our room (with pizza and chocolate milk) before going to sleep each night.  So I challenge you to do the same… devote a day or two when you turn everything off (except for your phone for calls and texts if you need to!) and just be with the people around you.  I promise that you won’t regret that time spent together.
