Photography Goals for 2013

Well, it’s here.  In some parts of the world, people rang in the new year before I was even fully awake!  And for so many reasons, I’m SO excited about 2013.  First and foremost, I’m most excited about being able to focus on photography full time.  Part of me is still stuck in holiday/vacation mode so it hasn’t really sunk in yet, but it’s for real.  THIS is my job!  My one and only job!!  And as I spent some time this morning thinking through what I’d like to accomplish for the year, I realized that I really do have my work cut out for me.  But I’m so. stinking. excited.

Around this time last year, I remember Justin and Mary (and probably several other photographers) saying that if you take the time to write down your goals and dreams, when you get to the end of the year, it’s easier to see how far you’ve come and what you need to work even harder on for the coming year.  And as I looked back at my 2012 list of goals, I saw that yes, I reached and even exceeded some goals (we had 11 weddings! 3 more than I’d hoped for!), but in other cases, I didn’t dream big enough.  So, 2013 is for dreaming BIG.  Ben and I were talking about the number of weddings we’d like to shoot this year and me, taking a semi easy way out, said I’d like for the goal to be 15 weddings, but I’d actually like 20.  Do you see what I did there?  I was setting it to where I wouldn’t be disappointed if we didn’t reach 20 weddings.  And yes, 15 would be wonderful.  But really?  I really would like 20.  I’d like to get to know and to photograph 20 couples as they begin their lives together as husband and wife.  I’d really like to walk through the wedding process with 20 brides and help them and serve them as best I can.  I LOVE looking at our weddings from this past year and seeing how we grew as a husband and wife team.  And I would love to grow even more in this coming year.

Do you know what else I’d love to do??  Now this is my really big, really “out there”, kind of dream… I’d love to book an international wedding.  Anywhere outside the states would be amazing!  But even more so than that, I’d love to book a wedding in France.  There.  I said it.  And it’s on the list.  And I have no clue how I’m going to accomplish that.  But it’s ok because I have 365 days to work towards it :-)

What are your goals and dreams for the coming year?  What are you hoping for?  What are you scared to dream of?  I promise that if you are too scared to dream it, then you’ll be too scared to take the opportunity when it comes your way.  So, let 2013 be the year of bold dreams!

*Updated to mention that I do have more than 5 goals for the year (13 for ’13!)!  But the image above was an Instagram so only a few would fit :-)
