Thankful Thursday | Crossfit Family

As we sat on the airdynes and our legs and bums became more stiff as the minutes ticked by, I looked down the line of bikes to see that everyone was just as out of breath and wiped out as I was.  Every minute we had to go at least at 80% of our ability for 30 seconds.  And we did this 30 times.  Which means we were on those bikes (aka torture devices) for 44 minutes.

After the first 10 or 12 minutes, I used my minute of rest to get off the bike and get my water bottle and felt like I was learning to walk for the first time in my life.  Luckily, I didn’t fall flat on my face, but a thought occurred to me… a thought that was confirmed after my friend, Anne, got off her bike for the first time to get some water somewhere around the 22 minute mark.  As she walked back towards her bike and climbed on, I asked her if she had ever seen an episode of The Walking Dead.  Her immediate response was to ask if it’s because that’s how she looked as she walked… and we both started laughing.  We came to the conclusion that this was how they taught the zombies to walk in the tv show… they MUST have a row of airdynes on set, make the extras climb on for several minutes, and have them push as hard as they can for as long as they can stand it.  Then, they go to film their scene.

The fun part is that in the midst of the pain and torture that our coaches put us through, there is always so much laughter, so much joking around, and so much of life happening inside that gym.

When Ben and I started doing this back in October, we were thankful for something that would push us, grow us, and make us stronger.  And we were thankful that it was something we could do together!  What we didn’t expect… at all… was to find a gym full of people that we also enjoyed doing this with.

Sometimes it takes me a while to warm up to people in new situations.  But there’s something about pushing each other, working hard together, and watching everyone grow and beat their own records that brings you together.  And that’s not even counting my Biggest Loser Breakdown moment kind of bonding that I had and Melissa stepped in to calm me down and encourage me!  I think I’ve already said it 15 times in this post, but I’ll say it again.  We’re thankful for this community we’ve found in our “box”.  We’re also super thankful for our heath, the energy we have, and how this family keeps pushing us to be better.  It’s amazing how hearing someone say time and time again, “You can do this!” will push you not only to lift those weights, or keep spinning those horrid pedals, but to push for dreams and goals and other things you never thought possible.

  1. I LOVE this. You’ve said a ton of things that I haven’t been able to find words for in my crossfit experience, and shoot, it’s only been a couple of weeks for me! Ha! You seriously inspire Sabrina!!!

  2. I was on one of those airdyne’s…it was no joke !

    Great artical

  3. Melissa Warner says:

    Don’t forget- you are stronger than you think you are!! Everyone has good days, and days where you think that all of this might just break you. Don’t let it. You win every time!!! So, so, so proud!!!

  4. Todd Ford says:

    Great post! And yes those airdynes are serious.

  5. Tanya Stiegler says:

    Thanks, Sabrina, you’ve captured a lot of what I really appreciate about crossfit too… stick with it, it gets even better!

  6. Anna Louise says:

    Airdyne = devil’s tricycle

    I also love the CrossFit community. It means WAY more than just a workout or just a gym. It’s a family! It has changed my perspective on health and fitness forever. Rock on!
