What We Wear to Shoot Weddings

Someone left a comment a few weeks ago asking what Ben and I wear to shoot weddings… and while I’ve seen other photographers post about this, I’ve never thought about doing it myself!  See, my style is well… boring.  I almost always choose comfy over being stylish and it’s embarrassing to admit how long I’ve owned some pants and sweaters that are in my closet (that I still wear!).  Don’t get me wrong, I really do enjoy dressing up.  But when it comes to shopping and buying new clothes, you’re more likely to find me curled up in a ball amongst the racks trying to remember to breathe than you will see me grabbing outfits to try on in the dressing room.  It’s just so overwhelming!  I’m definitely a mannequin shopper… if I see it on a mannequin and I like it, that’s the outfit I’ll walk out of the store with!

But, all that aside, asking what we wear to shoot in is actually a really good question.  Photographers have all different ideas on what they wear to weddings and why.  But this is my personal take on it… I want us to look nice and professional and be able to blend in with the guests.  Comfort comes into play mostly in regards to my shoes.  It’s SO HARD to find cute shoes that won’t be killing my feet at the end of the day.  And luckily, comfort and cute are coming together more and more these days!  I have an older pair of Mary Jane Crocs (yes, Crocs) that I wore for a couple of years but they now look old and each time I put them on with a black dress, their faded black just doesn’t do it for me.  So, I found a pair of black flats at DSW for about $40 that have been fabulous.

This is the closest thing I could find to what I have.  The main difference is that mine have a silver buckle on the toe instead of a bow.  They’re Me Too flats and I love them.

Remember how I said I keep things in my closet for years? The first one of me is from 2011 and I’d bought that dress (and those shoes) in 2010.  And I still wear them now…

Ben is typically in dark pants and a white or dark button down shirt.  And I’m usually in a black or grey dress.
(We also don’t typically take pictures like this at weddings, but when the groom takes your camera and starts directing you, you do what he says!)

This wedding was more formal so we dressed more formally… and I actually really liked it.  And Ben was such a good sport to wear a coat and tie!
But my goodness, since he looks that good in a coat and tie, we may change our approach to what we wear to weddings this year!
And please don’t mind that look on my face… it was raining and we were all trying to decide what to do.  That’s my thinking face!

For weddings in the cooler months, Ben usually adds a sweater (again, I love how that looks on him!) and I’ll add layers too.

This year I found a floor length sweater dress with 3/4 length sleeves.  So of course I bought one in grey and one in black!
(And you can kind of see the shoes that I mentioned above.)

I started wearing dresses instead of pants a couple of years ago and actually really like it.  I feel dressier, which makes me feel prettier, which makes me more confident in what I’m doing.  It might sound crazy, but it’s what I tell my couples when they’re deciding what to wear for engagement sessions… the more amazing you look, the better you feel, the more that will come out in your photos.  So why not apply the same thing to when I work??

Love this post! ;) I wear similar shoes from Lindsay Phillips that I found on sale. And LOVE LOVE those floor length dresses! I too feel the same way about shooting in dresses vs. pants.

Loved looking at your pictures. Hope you don’t mind me commenting so much….but we just enjoy seeing pictures of you both!
