4 Things I Tell My Brides On Their Wedding Day

There are a few things that have become part of my regime on wedding days when it comes to what I tell the bride.  There are so many details that she’s planning up to that point and with these few things, it’s actually easier on her already overwhelmed brain if I wait to even mention them.  So, if you’re a future “Sabrina bride” then you’re actually getting an early heads up ;-)

This first one is actually something I DO mention before the wedding so that on the big day, nothing should have to be said about it…

1. Have someone else be the go-to person so you can enjoy the day!  The last thing you need to be worrying about when you’re getting your hair and makeup done is giving your second cousin the address to the church… again.  This job is best suited for the maid/matron of honor or a wedding coordinator.  Let everyone know ahead of time who they can contact and that you are not going to be answering your phone on the wedding day!  (Obviously you can, but you don’t need to be stressed with details like this).  One person this job isn’t meant for is the mother of the bride.  Her two jobs the day of her daughter’s wedding are to 1-be your mom and 2-be the hostess at the reception.  So if she’s trying to coordinate other people or things, she won’t be able to ENJOY being the MOB for the day!

2. Before the first look, I tell the bride and groom to take as much time as they want to soak each other in. Then, I ask them to let us know when they’re ready to start portraits.  The wedding day is going to be a blur no matter what.  But those 5 or so minutes of a First Look are precious and so intimate that I don’t want to take anything away from the couple seeing each other for the first time!  When Ben and I saw each other for our First Look, it honestly felt like time stood still… and looking back at our photos, it was easy to see that our incredible photographers let us just BE together for a little bit.  The rest of the day is going to be a rush of timelines and schedules so for this particular moment, I want the bride and groom to feel like they have all the time in the world!

3. Let your first kiss be longer than a quick peck!  Yes, you’re kissing in front of 100+ people, but trust me, no one will bat an eye if you hold onto that first kiss as husband and wife.  Shoot, go in for a second one while you’re at it!  Your friends and family will all be so excited that you’re married and if you sneak in a second kiss, you might even get a cheer or two ;-)

4. During the departure, I tell them to walk through the lines of their guests and soak in the last moment of their wedding day!  Walking, instead of running, during the departure actually serves two purposes.  For the bride and groom, it gives them one more chance to soak up the last bit of their wedding day.  For us, especially if the departure is after sunset, it gives us an opportunity to get some good photographs since it’s easier to focus at night when the couple is moving slowly rather than running.  But just in case they walk a little faster than anticipated, I also ask them to stop half or 3/4 of the way down and kiss.  So that way, best case scenario, they get awesome shots of the departure AND one last kiss!
