This Business

There are times that I question the business decisions I’ve made… like when I meet up with a family who has become friends and capture photos like this (oh baby Jett, you are adorable!!), I question whether I should have given up photographing families and children.

But when I look at things and evaluate where I’ve come, where I’m headed, and what I love to do, it always brings me back to weddings, births and sometimes seniors.  Not that I don’t love families… but I think part of it has to do with my personality and of course my gifts and strengths.  Naturally, I’m more introverted and reserved.  So, having the chance to get to know a couple through their engagement, potential bridal portraits, and then seeing them again on their wedding day, gives me a chance to get to know them and for them to know me.  With a family session, I don’t always get that kind of time to build a trust and a relationship.

With births, I meet with the parents beforehand and on delivery day, I’m more of a fly on the wall while taking photos than trying to direct a group of people to smile and look like they love each other ;-)  And even though I’m more like a fly on the wall than a participant in anything on those delivery days, I’m still in that room for a long time… so that’s time to get to know people!

Granted, there would be opportunities to do that with families too.  Especially if they came back to me year after year for family portraits.  And maybe once we have a family of our own, things will change.  But for right now, I know I’ve made the right decision.  I’m sticking to what I know and love and live in (ok, I don’t really live in the “wedding world”, but I do enjoy being a part of the industry!).
