Valentine’s Day – aka Single’s Awareness Day

I get it.  I really do!  Even though I dated a little bit during and after college, I was never dating anyone ON Valentine’s day.  Or Christmas or my birthday (not really anyway) for that matter.  But, looking back, it’s a really huge blessing!  Because now, I get to celebrate with the only person I ever really wanted to celebrate with anyway – my husband.

But all of those years of walking through “the day of love” without a love had its ups and downs.  I’ll spare you all of the gory and embarrassing details (like the time I sent my 7th grade crush a carnation through the Beta Club at school and everyone was talking about it… um, can we say mortified??).   Sadly, at the time, I didn’t know that it really was worth it for a girl to NOT pursue a guy, nor did I realize just how worth it waiting on the right guy was.  Granted, I was 13… so I’ll blame it on that.

What God showed me through each Valentine’s Day though was how much more fulfilling His love for me was than anyone else’s love on earth.  Even the love of my husband.  But the cool thing is that Ben knows this too!  He knows that as much as I love and adore and respect him, that God is going to love Him WAY more and WAY better than I’ll ever be able to… no matter how hard I try!

So, I changed my perspective of “Single’s Awareness Day” and as I watched others receive flowers and candy and go on dates, I got excited for them and gave them a card from me too!  One year I purchased a box of Valentine’s like the ones we’d get in elementary school to give to all of our classmates and passed them out to my co-workers. Yes, they were cheesy ones, but no one was mad that I gave them one!  Everyone was smiling!  One year I actually had photo cards made that I mailed out.  Granted, that was partially because I hadn’t gotten my act together for Christmas (or New Year’s…) so Valentine’s was next on the list!  But you know what?  When Jesus said that it’s better to give than to receive, he was right.  And if you haven’t found that out for yourself, give it a try!  The blessing of giving to others – whether anonymously or not – is huge.  And so much fun!  Don’t get me wrong, receiving gifts is really fun too, but the blessing that comes from giving something to someone else is amazing.  And you never know when a card or a note or a text will be received just when that person needed some love or encouragement at that very moment!

These little cards are from the Jones Design Company, a blog I happened to find a while back that has become one of my favorite blogs!  Not only does she have some super amazing ideas, but she has tutorials and giveaways and encouragement all over the place!  And she’s so generous with her creativity that she gives away stuff like these printable notecards!  And you know what?  They’re perfect for you to print out and hand out to friends, family, and co-workers.  They’re also perfect for any time of the year.  You can stick them in lunch bags, or briefcases, or you can even stick in an envelope and put them in the mail!  Who doesn’t love getting real mail??  C’mon… surely I’m not the only one :-)

Be sure to check out Emily’s blog and print her cards off here.

Happy Valentine’s, everyone!  I hope that regardless of who you’re with today that you feel immeasureably and fully loved.
